Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's largest city and its commercial engine — a humid, energetic port where office towers, old Swahili neighbourhoods, and Indian Ocean beaches sit side by side. It is not a city that shows off. It rewards curiosity, especially around food, music, and the water.
Dar es Salaam
A little history
The stories beneath the streets.
The city began as a fishing village called Mzizima. In 1862 Sultan Majid of Zanzibar built a new town here and called it Dar es Salaam — 'the house of peace' — hoping to create a mainland trading base.
Under German and later British rule it grew into an administrative and railway hub. It served as Tanzania's capital until 1974, when the government moved to Dodoma, but it remains the country's economic and cultural centre.
